Many sports drinks contain small amounts of sodium for enhanced fluid absorption. Studies show that marathon runners who consume commercial drinks with a little added sodium have a higher total fluid intake (beneficial in such a tough sport) than those who drink plain water.
WHICH TYPE OF SPORTS DRINK IS RIGHT FOR YOU?Most of the popular brands are isotonic - which means they have the same osmolality as the body's own fluids, so they are easily absorbed and designed to be drunk before and during exercise. Whilst hypotonic sports drinks have fewer particles than body fluid and are absorbed faster than plain water and hypertonic drinks have a high osmolality and are best taken as recovery drink after a workout.
