Nutrition for sailing - Team member Volvo Extreme 40 catamaran...Hamish

I'm Hamish Oliphant and I was crew member onboard the "Team Motorola" Volvo Extreme 40 catamaran in the recent 2005-6 Grand Prix that was run alongside the Volvo Ocean Race. The catamarans are high-tech carbon fibre race yachts that are very fast and physical to sail. The events were held in Sanxenxo in Spain, Rio de Janiero in Brazil, Baltimore in the USA, Portsmouth in the UK and Rotterdam in Holland.

The competition was tough many Olympic sailors and World Champions on board The Grand Prix racing consisted of 4-5 short 30 minute races around a tight course which demanded continuous work to keep the boat moving fast against the opposition. With a crew of only 4 sailing, the large sail area, the speed of the boats and short courses we had to work hard through out the duration of the race and only a short break in between races. We finished in 3rd place overall.

We used to simply take water racing to keep ourselves hydrated. We started using Lift Off boost energy drink to provide hydration and to give us more energy. LiftOff enabled us to keep going for longer without feeling tired and made us more alert. Also our body rehydration improved as the Liftoff drink liquid was absorbed into our bodies better and so less liquid simply passed through us. The tablets enabled us to mix up the drink from water provided by support boat in between races. A great drink that enables you to work harder, without feeling it!"

I have attached some photos of the boat that you may want to use. If you do want to use any of them, can you let me know and I will tell you who to credit. If you want any more info about the circuit, you can get it from the website http://www.volvoextreme40.nl/ See more on sport nutrition for sailing and windsurfing.
